What's cool about this job

At REI our core mission is to inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship. If you love the outdoors and contributing to a solid, forward-leaning team, then this is your role! Come join IT Merchandise as we build the systems that that power REI’s Digital and Retail Stores!

We are looking for a Software Engineer Intern who can help create and support the next generation Merchandising and Private Brands software. Most of our systems are in AWS, built using Terraform and delivered using Jenkins, and run the gamut from Java microservices in Docker containers running on Fargate, to Angular.js, to IIS and VBA in Excel. If you like variety, we have it! This is an exciting time to be at REI, as we continue to push forward in our systems and processes and mature in our cloud, CI/CD and DevOps practices. Join the team and help drive this forward!

But wait, what's merchandising? Great question! We own the systems that help tie stores to the supply chain. You know that favorite fleece of yours? Somebody at REI had to decide to continue to carry that in your local store, in your size, in your favorite color….and to carry enough of them that we didn't run out before you were able to buy it, and not so many that we look like a fleece warehouse. If you have an engineering mind, then right now you're starting to think AI…and if you ARE starting to think AI, we should chat.

If you think that sounds fun, we haven't even started to talk about life at REI! That was just the "work" part. Imagine a world where people are happy to come to work, where everybody is talking about their latest outdoor adventure, where people are supportive, get a Yay Day when they want to go play, where boxes are delivered daily with deep pro-deal discounts on the coolest gear, and where a retailer closes its doors on Black Friday in an effort to get everybody to #OptOutside. That's not a magical unicorn, my friend. That's REI. Come play with us!
